Sacred Anatomy: Lesson 1

The first story is the Before-I-had-much-education-on-my-sacred-anatomy story. It starts with a kick-me-when-I’m-down story. I think we all have a kick-me-when-I’m-down story. A dark night of the soul. A wake up call into a reality our ego would like to take a raincheck on. Some of us take it as a personal assault from the divine. This batch of folks falls into the demise of those with victim-mentality. I knew enough to know better. Maybe.
Are you asking the wrong question?

The Wrong Question: “My friend has MS – Is there anything Ayurveda can do for her?” … a quick interview of Dr. Claudia Welch explains why this is the WRONG QUESTION. The short easy question to ask to any good holistic practitioner puts a huge burden on the practitioner. For to aptly answer this question, […]
Resolve to be Useful

I’ve been noticing the conversation “out there” about resolutions. The tide seems to be shifted away from resolutions (argument: they don’t work) and towards something else. The something else isn’t well articulated. Here is my two cents: Humans are part of a cyclical planet. Cycles have pulsation. Resolve is part of the pulsation. If we […]
Why Yogis Snort Oil

I was 26 years old… raised on the S.A.D. diet. I was a first year student on the way to becoming an Ayurvedic Practitioner. I had horrible seasonal allergies and recurrent migraines. I elected to do Pancha Karma training as part of my Ayurvedic training. (Pancha Karma the vedic system of detox and disease extraction). […]
Sun Salutations Cheat Sheet

In the very beginning of my yoga journey I photocopied the poses from The Iyengar Way. Then, I taped the images to my wall next to where I started my home practice. Having the poses on the wall was a convincing reminder to get on the mat and do the practice. I learned their sanskrit names and the alignment. As my practice advanced, I’d replace the poses I knew with the ones I did not.

Can my Family Detox?

Here is the deal – we don’t realize how much our kids symptoms- physical, emotional and mental – are correlated with their diet. We also don’t realize how we can change our cravings. When we don’t realize these connections – our kids don’t learn to identify them for themselves. The stakes are high.
Ode to my Grandmother: Investing in An Evolutionary Strategy for Your Aging

There is a humility to our bodies aging that bewilders me. How can I make the best of this precious vehicle – this holy abode – for up to 60 more years?
This is the question. I wrote a blog post naming some of the bigger issues and opportunities I see with aging. My sense is it comes down to how we invest. Invest our awareness, which is our time. Invest our dollars in that which inspires us to take up better ways of being in a body. Invest in communities to support our growth, and how we grow our families, and our students families.
Ayurveda Daily Practices for Mothers of Young Children

My experience with spiritual and bodily practices and raising a baby led me to believe that motherhood needs it’s own daily practices guidelines. FOCUS Expect household rhythms to change… frequently. Don’t try to live up to standards and assumptions created my men living in caves, who had women cooking their meals. They don’t apply to […]
Eat Green in Yoga Journal

Desiree Rumbaugh and I are psyched to be in the March 2013 edition of Yoga Journal for our Eat Green Challenge. Check out p. 37-44 – the article by Lavinia Spalding called Crunch Time: Revitalize yourself with a plant-based eating plan that celebrates fruits and veggies. Also, Des and I want to get a shout out to our dear old friend and colleague, Stacey Rosenberg, who is the “student” of Eat Green in the article.
